Note: The following is written by Anna Muckerman, who is with the News-Post for the summer … or, well the foreseeable future, at least. We’re pretty sure she’s also heading to Firefly this weekend and you can follow her on Twitter here. Enjoy!
If you’re heading to the Firefly Music Festival from Frederick this weekend, there’s only 130 miles of road standing between you and four days of music you won’t forget. Luckily, we’ve put together a playlist of both popular and up-and-coming festival performers to get you through the drive. Even if you’ve already made a schedule of your favorite musicians, here are some acts to keep an eye on.
Maggie Rogers
The Maryland native’s career took off when Pharrell Williams listened to her music at a critique session at New York University, where she studies. Pharrell said he “had never heard anything like” her sound, but we’ll let you decide for yourself. If you’re into the likes of Haim and other ethereal indie acts, and you can make it to the festival on Thursday, Maggie Rogers shouldn’t disappoint.
Cashmere Cat
This producer has been popular in the electronic scene for a while, but his recent collaborations with Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande means his emergence into the world of mainstream pop is imminent. It’s worth a listen to his older tracks to see how his funky, computer-made sounds are still influencing the radio hits of the biggest pop stars.
Kaleo
This Icelandic trio’s gruff vocals might remind you of the frozen tundra of their homeland … or maybe just Hozier. Either way, the rhythmic drive of their music, including hit single “Way Down We Go,” is enough to keep you focused on the road and in the mood to enjoy good music when you arrive.
Bob Dylan
If you haven’t heard of him, be sure to check it out. Really, though. It’s sad to think that this year’s generation of flower crown-wearing, 14-year-olds may never have heard of the American legend. Even as his voice withers, kudos to Dylan for showing up to educate the youth.
