For episode No. 17 of the For The Record podcast, we brought in local singers Paul Pfau and Treeva Gibson, who you might recognize from the current season of NBC’s “The Voice.” Not only did they sit and talk with the Frederick News-Post’s Paige Jones for about 45 minutes, but they were also kind enough to perform one song each, both of which you can hear here.

Among the things Jones discussed with them:

– What’s it like to keep the secret of being on “The Voice” for so long.

– How many celebrity sightings each singer had.

– What’s next for them as both artists and people.

– Which coaches were nice, which coaches they were hoping to work with, and which coaches left the biggest impressions.

– And, of course, some of their favorite memories from the experience.

We are ending the year on a high note, friends, as we are world-premiering three brand new recordings from one of Frederick’s best bands, Old Indian. They recently recorded their first-ever full-length, “Mumble,” and in this episode, you can hear three of the songs that will appear on it. In addition to those brand-spankin’-new tracks, we also discuss:

– What went into the recording of “Mumble.” They worked with the great Kenny Eaton, of Mystery Ton Studios, who, if you remember, was also a guest on a previous episode of this podcast. As you can imagine, they have a lot of nice things to say about him.

– How their drummer Evan cut off the top of his finger once. We’ll just let that sentence sit right there and back away from it.

– What differences lie between playing in Frederick and getting out on the road to tour. They have a pretty loyal following wherever they go, and we talk a little about how they earned the respect of their peers.

– Some of the best places for live music in Frederick. There are two venues in particular that they reference and they talk a little about the different crowds that always seem to show up at certain places.

– And, of course, how Old Indian came to be. They attribute their longevity to their willingness to never give up, but how far do they want to take the music thing? And would any of them want to be in a band full-time?

Remember: You’ll have to wait another month or two to get your hands on the record, but if nothing else, skip past me babbling and use this as an appetizer for what’s to come from Old Indian. Anyone who’s ever seen them perform know that these guys have grown into a pretty great band through the years – and they are certainly one of the more recognizable names to come from Frederick today – so you’ll want to check out what they have to say about pretty much everything. Plus, it’s the end of the year. What else do you have to do? Open presents?!?! Pshhhhh. Three new Old Indian tracks are the gifts that keep giving!

Hey, have you checked out the first video edition of our brand new feature Frederick Playlist Presents … ? If you haven’t, you should, because featured is Frederick rock band Twin Radio, who were kind enough to come by the FNP offices and perform two acoustic songs. After they finished performing, I took Corey and Brandon aside to chat a little. Among the things we discussed:

– What went into their latest record, “The Coast Of Indigo,” which came out this year. There’s a pretty heavy-duty named attached to it, so you’ll probably want to listen to hear who it is.

– What the Frederick music community needs to work on in order to grow. And yes, I asked them to give me anything other than a proper venue to see live music.

– An incredibly scary tour story they endured a few months ago that involves flat tires, the city of Boston, an intersection and canceled tour dates.

– How they made a pretty great-looking video for their song “Still Burning” and how they managed to do it all on a budget.

– And, of course, what’s next for Twin Radio and “The Coast Of Indigo.”

For The Record Podcast Episode 14 – Erin Westin of Flying Dog

Who doesn’t like a good reason to drive over to Flying Dog’s tap room?! That’s what I did a couple weeks ago to sit down with Erin Westin, the brewery’s Director of Communications. Why do that? Because we are smack-dab in the middle of Flying Dog’s Summer Sessions concert series. Considering how the fine people over there have been gracious enough to allow us to set up shop at each of their four concerts this summer, we thought it’d be a good idea to dive in a little more to learn about the planning that goes into these types of events. Among the thing we discuss:

– How they choose the bands for each summer.

– How important it was for Flying Dog to keep the opening acts as local as they could (Old Indian and Heavy Lights are taking the stage during these final two shows).

– What might set Frederick apart from surrounding cities.

– What Flying Dog has in store for this weekend’s event, which will feature J Roddy Walston And The Business in the headlining spot.

– And, of course, who some of Ms. Westin’s favorite local artists are.

Aiming to provide a one-stop shop for all things local artists may need – from recordings and professional photography to everything else in between – at an affordable price, Studio 301 is looking to become every local musician’s new best friend. In addition to the songs heard here – songs that, by the way, were recorded at the studio – we sat and discussed a whole bunch of things. Among them:

– What some of the best-kept secrets in Frederick music are.

– The status of Cramer’s band, Matthew Martin and the Restless Weary, and who the current lineup may or may not feature.

– The trials and tribulations of heading into a studio to record for the first time.

– What type of recording gear Cramer likes to use.
